Can this download videos from YouTube or other streaming sites?

No. Streaming platforms wrap their video streams in technical protections, and bypassing those to save a copy is a DMCA anti-circumvention violation and against those platforms' terms of service, regardless of how it's implemented. This tool instead converts a video file you already have, or fetches a direct link to an actual video file (like a CDN asset or a webinar recording) — both of which are legally clean.

Why did fetching a video URL fail?

Many video hosts block direct cross-site fetches from a browser (CORS). If that happens, download the file to your device first (right-click → Save As), then use "Upload a file" instead.

Which sites work with "paste a link" instead of uploading a file?

Any URL that points straight at a video file, served by a host that allows cross-origin access (CORS), will work. In practice that covers: developer/cloud file hosts like GitHub (raw file and release-asset links), Google Cloud Storage, Amazon S3, and Cloudflare R2 public buckets; open cultural and government archives like Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, the NASA Image and Video Library, the Smithsonian Open Access collection, and Library of Congress digital media; stock-video libraries like Pexels, Pixabay, Mixkit, and Coverr; cloud file-sharing links set to "anyone with the link" on Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive/SharePoint; Cloudinary-hosted assets and self-hosted WordPress media libraries; a Vimeo video whose uploader enabled downloads; and chat/social CDN attachment links from Discord, Imgur, and Streamable. It will not work with YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook links (see the question above for why) or with any host that blocks cross-site requests — in either case, download the file to your device first and use "Upload a file" instead.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, 500MB per file, since everything is processed in your browser rather than on a server.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No — conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm. Your file never leaves your device.

Is my data safe? Could I ever lose my work?

Your work is saved as you go, and our database keeps a rolling restore point covering the last 6 hours, so a recent mistake can be undone to the minute. Every night we also back everything up to a separate, encrypted cloud storage provider, keeping every nightly copy for 35 days and one copy a month for a year. Because the backups live with a different provider than the database, an outage or problem at one never takes your work with it.
